This is an AMAZING hockey team in our area and they were featured on the local news last night! :) The people who run it are absolutely wonderful- they have been friends of the family for years and I had no idea about this league until Evan was born! Needless to say, both Evan and Lina will be joining when the time comes. :) Check them out!!

Preparing for Preschool
I SO cannot believe I'm writing a post about this. Not because it's not post-worthy, but because I'm in total denial about Evan being old enough to start preschool this coming fall!! AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!! My baby is growing up WAY too fast!!
My other two kids began preschool at 2 years old and Evan will be following suit. With Kaylin- she had already been going to daycare everyday while I was still working, so when I resigned from my job and stayed home with them after Justin entered the world, I enrolled my little social butterfly into a part-time preschool program just 2 mornings a week so she could still have that "Kaylin" time to focus on herself and learn a bit along the way as well. With Justin- he was such a mama's boy- didn't want to separate for anything, and he also had a speech delay. I wanted him to adjust to being away from Mommy for short periods, and I wanted him to be in the classroom setting with his peers to help improve his speech. It worked WONDERS. Both Kaylin and Justin attended a half-day program from two years old through four years old- their two year old programs were twice a week, three year old programs were three mornings a week, and four year old programs were 5 mornings a week- building to prepare for 5 days of full-day kindergarten the following year.
As a former Pre-K teacher, I'm a BIG fan of starting preschool early. Some may argue: but they are still so young.... keep them home while you can.... why the rush?? But really, two mornings a week is not taking my child out of my home for that long. My child is learning how to follow a class routine as well as interact with her/his peers. Yes, both Kaylin and Justin entered preschool already knowing their letters, numbers, shapes, and colors. That is NOT the soul purpose of preschool! It's all about socialization. And Evan will certainly benefit from these same experiences as well.
Only Evan's preschool experience will be a bit different. He will still attend the same preschool Justin attended 2 mornings a week, but between those days he will also attend a Special Education preschool program through the county schools. It is in the public school program he will receive the bulk of his therapies, while he will gain the socialization skills in the *typical* preschool setting.
When I called the director of the Christian preschool where I am enrolling both Evan and Lina, she was eager to have us come visit and show Evan the classroom. Upon receiving this invitation, I became a nervous wreck! Maybe we should wait until closer to the end of the year when Evan has progressed a little more with his walking.... maybe he'll be saying a few words by then? I just worried he would stick out like a sore thumb, looking more like a little baby than a preschooler. But after talking with the director (she is amazing!) she reassured me they had a student last year who wasn't walking and had some other special needs, and I figured it would be easier to bring Evan in now before we get Lina home. So, our visit was scheduled... and I brought Evan in this morning! So nervous....
Another worry- I was worried how the staff would react to Evan- not that they wouldn't be welcoming, but if they were confident in having a student with Down syndrome in their class. I know when I was teaching Pre-K, I had a student with Down syndrome enter my class- and I was very nervous about being able to meet his needs- and he had a one-to-one assistant with him! Evan will not have his own aide in the class, though this 2 yr old class has a teacher, assistant, aide, and usually a parent helper, with a max class size of 12. I am also hoping to arrange his current therapists to come into the preschool class to work with him as well. So..... when we walked in- we were greeted very warmly, and no one seemed nervous at all about Evan's presence. In fact, he was treated just like all the other students in the class. We came toward the end of Circle Time, so Evan was able to participate in their center time- moving around the classroom playing with different toys.
Next worry- how are the other children going to react to him? Surely, seeing him crawl around more than walking will bring attention to him, but they didn't seem phased at all. One little girl in particular took a keen liking to Evan, bringing him toys and giving him hugs. :) So sweet! And my brag for the day: Evan likes to follow lines on the floor (no that's not the brag LOL) so he found a big line made of masking tape and followed it to the stop sign at the end. He then sat on the stop sign and signed, "STOP!" So proud! I had no idea he knew what a stop sign was! Then later I recalled the Baby Signing Time song that teaches "stop" and Rachel holds a big stop sign. Smart cookie! He did walk around the room a bit, especially if he had toys in his hands- his confidence is definitely growing with the walking, and we see this at home as well.
I walked out of the preschool feeling much more confident about Evan starting school in the fall. Next up: Speech and OT when we got home. I had just spoken with Evan's Speech therapist a couple weeks ago about bumping his services back up- Speech and OT had been coming together three times a month- twice for speech/play/fine motor, and once for feeding therapy. At Evan's annual review in December, they recommended backing down to once a month each. This made me very nervous. I gave it a try, but still didn't have good feelings about it, so I requested we go back to our old schedule.
I'm not sure how other states/counties run their Early Intervention Services, but in our area- it is basically family coaching. The therapists come to the house to work with Evan, showing ME what to do with him since I am his primary teacher throughout the day. So when his OT asked me about my feelings regarding his therapies, she also reassured me that he is making GREAT progress, he has not shown any regression, and she doesn't believe he needs the increase in services.... But... I too am an integral part of this team, and she understands how I feel, and has no problem increasing services. I then admitted that yes, a main reason I want to go back to our other schedule is reassurance for myself... to keep myself accountable in a sense. It was awesome hearing them talk about how well Evan is doing- oftentimes we focus on goals we want Evan to achieve- areas he needs to grow and improve. It's nice to hear how well he is doing in the grand scheme of things, and that yes, he really is well on his way to preschool.

Sleepover Fun :)
So here's the scoop on Kaylin's sleepover last night!! Since this was our first sleepover EVER, we started out small. I also planned ahead and took the two boys to my parents' house for the weekend so we could focus on the girls and get as much rest in between as possible! ;) Sooooo glad we did- I knew Justin would want to be included in everything and would have lots of hurt feelings, and Evan being 2 still needs lots of attention. They have both been enjoying their time with MomMom and PopPop. :)
Kaylin invited her three closest friends from school, so we have a nice small yet even number to keep all guests happy. We had lots of activities available including a few crafts, and the girls went back and forth between sit-down structured activity and free play/hyper boy-gossiping excitement. Fun stuff!
Kaylin began the party with a game of Disney Scene-It (which I scored for $2 at a consignment sale that day- Go me!!) and lost interest after about 10 minutes. We then started a craft to make cozy sleepytime flip flops, but we quickly learned the fake fur was a bit tricky for the girls to cut. So... Mike got pizza while they moved on to Mad Libs, and I cut out all the fur pieces. I went ahead and glued them to the soles of the flip flops for the girls, too, with hot glue- didn't want them messing with the hot glue gun. So this one turned out to be a Mommy craft. LOL The girls LOVED their flip flops though. :)
Flip flops $2.50/pair at Target; fur was $3.25 for a quarter yard at Joann's. Note: hot glue did not hold on all the flip flops so I used some double sided mounting tape- not sure how effective that was either. The directions called for double sided carpet tape which I was unable to find in time, though I didn't get a chance to stop at a hardware store- just looked in Walmart and Target to no avail. The girls really liked the flip flops though so it was worth the effort.
After the girls ate their pizza, they proceeded downstairs to the playroom to play on their own for a while. They play very well together- I could have left them down there all night! LOL I came down during their Barbie fashion show to bring them upstairs for presents and cake.

After cake, the girls headed up to Kaylin's room with the books they brought for a book exchange- we asked the girls to bring a couple books they would like to swap. Each girl happened to bring two books, but it was funny how some didn't want to give up their old books- not because they wanted to keep them, but because they didn't care for them and didn't want to be embarrassed by what they brought! LOL Kaylin had a few books that she had duplicates of, so we were sure each girl went home with at least one new book even if they didn't want to part with the books they brought. All went very well- I was there to guide them through it also- highly recommended!
After the book exchange, the girls decided to make some friendship bracelets- I gave Kaylin a kit for her birthday and she was eager to share with her friends so they could all make bracelets together. They enjoyed gossiping around the table while tying their knots. :)
At 11:00 the girls were still rarin' to go, but it was time to get settled down, especially since I was having great difficulty staying awake! LOL Kaylin had picked out Treasure Buddies for her friends to watch. I popped up some corn, the girls laid out their sleeping bags and pillow pets, got in their jammies for those who weren't already- and snuggled down for their movie. As soon as they were finished their popcorn I had Kaylin pause the movie so they could brush their teeth and be all set in case (I would be so lucky that) anyone fell asleep during the movie. Well I wasn't so lucky! LOL The movie ended around 12:30 am- lights were out, television off, and I reminded them several times it was time to go to sleep. It got very quiet- I think two of the four were asleep by 1:00 AM- I know I was! As soon as I got up at 6:45 AM I could hear the girls starting to chat, too. Should be an interesting day today! Kaylin is usually VERY grumpy when she has had a late night, so we'll see what beast shows form later this afternoon. ;)
Girls ate their breakfast and decorated bags to hold their goodies- they headed back downstairs to play... I placed a favor in each and then they put their flip flops and friendship bracelets inside as well. They came upstairs to get dressed at 9:00 and their ride was here at 10:00. I'd say the party was a huge success- everyone was happy and seemed to have a great time. :)

*Wii (any of the Just Dance games or Sing It)
*headband craft kit (another one of Kaylin's birthday presents she wanted to use with her friends)
Another craft I wanted to do but couldn't find any plain white pillow cases at our local Walmart (they were too expensive ($25 and up) at the other stores I checked)-
*Let the girls decorate a white pillow case with fabric markers- they can sign each other's pillow case also as a memento from the sleepover. You can use this as their treat bag to put their goodies inside. I really really wanted to do this, and so did Kaylin- but I didn't have the time to drive around to other Walmarts in neighboring towns in search of them- I should have planned ahead and ordered some online. Just make sure you pre-wash them before having the girls draw on them. We'll have to save this craft for the next sleepover. ;)

I'm gonna need a t-shirt...
...that reads "I Survived My First Sleepover!" ;) Kaylin's first slumber party is in progress as I sit here and blog- we are keeping it small and I'm letting her take the lead as to what she wants to do with her friends. We have lots of games and activities for the girls and have been going back and forth between structured activity and free play/hyper boy-gossiping excitement. LOL I'll come back and blog after all is said and done on all the details!
I finished decorating her cake just before her friends arrived- whew!
I am FAR from professional- but I do enjoy making special themed cakes for my kids. :) I think they like it too. ;)

I won't get all sappy... this time. ;) I reflected on her birth story last year- you can find it HERE. This was the first year I didn't make her birthday cake for our family party- she insisted on an ice cream cake from our local homemade creamery. While I was a little sad I wasn't making her cake, I was a little excited on the inside since I LOVE their ice cream cakes! Soooooooo yummy. I also will still get the opportunity to make a cake for her- she is having her very first sleepover this weekend. Wish me luck!! I found the most adorable cake to make- crossing my fingers it turns out half as cute as the photo! I will post pics after the weekend. :)
Kaylin gets to celebrate with her cousin Sara since Sara's birthday was yesterday! :) The girls are very close and enjoy sharing their special day together. Sara just turned 13- a teenager already!!
I have to say- I am horrible at taking photos during birthday parties. There's too much going on- I'm busy keeping tabs on Evan as well as paying attention to what Kaylin's opening.... yadda yadda yadda... I need a photographer! LOL I never get photos of all our guests and then feel awful afterwards. I end up with a handful of pics and that's about it.

Snow!
We weren't expecting very much, but actually received a good couple inches of snow yesterday afternoon/evening. Since it wasn't too cold out I actually dragged Evan out for a little bit too. :) It's still tough since he's not full-fledged walking yet and just wants to crawl around- getting snow all between the bottom of his snow pants (which are a tad short) and his boots.

You really can't appreciate how funny this looked by the photo- this was me pulling Evan back up the hill- he couldn't keep himself sitting up so had to lay back- the expression on his face was so funny as he laid there, snow falling lightly on his face... I guess ya just had to be here! LOL
